How AI Voice Technology Is Transforming the Entertainment Industry

AI technologies are revolutionizing how the public accesses and consumes TV and film productions, video games, and advertising media. A key technology driving this innovation forward is AI voice technology. Rapid adoption of this allows for multilingual, digital replicas of content streamlined for global distribution; this increases reach and influence for a fraction of the cost. More specifically, there is a growing trend in Hollywood for celebrities willingly lending their voices in AI replication, for scalable and adaptable uses.

Inside the McConaughey & Caine Partnership With ElevenLabs

Recently, Matthew McConaughey and Michael Caine surprised the entertainment world when they entered into a partnership with Eleven Labs to develop AI-generated versions of their voices. The goal of the ElevenLabs deal is for both celebrities to create voice licensing agreements that creators and companies can use for narrations, ads, audiobooks, and other similar projects without paying the full premium price of talent like McConaughey and Caine.

McConaughey has worked closely with ElevenLabs since 2022 to produce multilingual versions of his digital newsletter “Lyrics of Livin”, in an AI generated version of his voice. The actor has stated that he supports the work ElevenLabs is doing to make media more accessible to the public, irrespective of any barriers that come with creating diverse media such as language requirements. McConaughey reportedly believes this technology is a way for humanity to stay connected in an era of digital isolation by creating timeless media that can be enjoyed for decades to come.

Caine similarly has expressed his intention to allow creatives to express their vision using his iconic narrative voice. Caine joined ElevenLabs in their new “Iconic Voice Marketplace,” where creatives can request to use an AI generated voice of Caine for narrative projects in audiobooks, documentaries, and other similar media. Caine’s purported aim is to allow the next generation of story tellers to use his voice in achieving a high-quality product with his authentic, authorized voice.

Both McConaughey and Caine’s AI voice replica deals with the AI software company are groundbreaking in many ways, and we will likely see more deals like this unveil as AI technology continues to advance and industry veterans lean into the latest trends.

What Talent and Creators Should Consider Before Licensing Their Voice to AI Companies

If you’re considering licensing your voice, or any other attributes, to AI companies, ensure that contract provisions, such as scope, exclusivity, duration, and revenue sharing, are clearly defined. Safeguards addressing potential misuse, unauthorized modification, and unapproved distribution should also be incorporated to protect both you and your brand. It’s equally important to outline reversion triggers and remedies in the event of breach, giving you a clear path of action should contractual terms be violated.

Before signing any agreements, consult with an entertainment attorney who can offer guidance in this rapidly evolving landscape. Contact Romano Law today to ensure you and your image and brand remain protected.
